"articleBody" : "Welding is a fundamental process in many industrial sectors, such as metal fabrication, shipbuilding and industrial maintenance. However, it is not without its dangers: it is an activity that exposes workers to significant health and safety risks, arising not only from immediate factors such as heat, but also from splashes of molten metal generated during the process. Without adequate protection, these factors can cause serious injuries, burns and chronic illnesses. Using specific, certified Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for welding is the only way to ensure genuine and lasting safety. Extreme heat and flying metal: the visible dangers in the workplace During welding, the electric arc can reach several thousand degrees. This intense heat source spreads throughout the work area in three ways: conduction (direct contact), convection (through the air) and radiation (electromagnetic waves). In fact, the operator is constantly exposed to: Contact burns: caused by accidentally touching superheated surfaces. Splashes and sparks: particles of molten metal that can pierce unsuitable clothing and cause deep injuries to the hands, chest and legs. Heat stress: resulting from prolonged work in high-temperature environments. It is a common misconception to think that ordinary workwear is sufficient. Ordinary clothing or synthetic fabrics not designed for welding can melt or catch fire, significantly increasing the risk of injury. The melting of synthetic fibres onto the skin can cause third-degree burns that are very difficult to treat. For this reason, the use of flame-retardant and heat-resistant clothing, such as Coval Safety’s split leather range, is essential to ensure the operator’s safety and prevent accidental fires. Don’t know the difference between inherently flame-retardant and treated fabric? Read our blog. The invisible risks: fumes, optical radiation and chronic illnesses Technical sources highlight that the most insidious hazards are those linked to process emissions: Damage to the respiratory system: Inhalation of metal fumes (zinc, manganese, chromium) and gases such as ozone can cause chronic bronchitis, pulmonary siderosis or acute poisoning. For example, manganese can cause neurological symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. Eye risks: The eye is the most sensitive organ. UV rays and blue light can cause the classic ‘arc flash’, but also irreversible damage to the retina and early-onset cataracts. Radiation and skin: In addition to burns, ultraviolet and infrared radiation can cause erythema and long-term skin damage. The parts of the body most prone to injury are typically the hands, forearms, chest and legs. It is therefore vital to wear PPE specifically designed to shield these areas, preventing heat from penetrating the tissues and neutralising the danger of molten metal splashes. There’s a glove best suited to every type of welding: read our blog. Coval Safety solutions: certified PPE fortotal protection To drastically reduce these risks, it is essential to use PPE specifically designed to withstand extreme thermal and mechanical stresses. Coval Safety offers a comprehensive range designed for every part of the body: Body Protection: The SPARK heat-resistant split leather jacket combines the durability of leather with the breathability of flame-retardant cotton on the back, making it ideal for preventing burns and heat build-up. Hand Protection: The 42VB Professional Gloves are specifically designed for wire welding, ensuring dexterity and superior thermal protection where the risk of spatter is highest. Additional Protection: The SPARK Apron and Welding Gaiters protect the chest and lower limbs from molten metal splashes, preventing sparks from settling on footwear or penetrating fabrics. To find out more, read our comprehensive guide to welding in comfort. Health and safety: investing in the wellbeing of welders Choosing Coval Safety solutions means relying on products designed to maximise operational comfort and mobility without ever compromising safety. Every device guarantees full regulatory compliance and superior durability, even in the most demanding industrial environments. Investing in operator protection is not only a legal obligation under Legislative Decree 81/08, but a strategic choice to ensure a healthy, safe and efficient working environment. "articleBody" : "How does B.PROTEC differ from other beekeeping or pest control coveralls? When it comes to working with bees, wasps, or hornets, safety is the top priority. Before tackling various jobs, many emergency response team operators, such as firefighters or civil protection personnel, ask themselves: “How does the B.PROTEC suit differ from other beekeeping or pest control suits?” The answer is simple: with special protection! Coval Safety meets this need with the B.PROTEC coverall, professional PPE designed for emergency response teams, with features that guarantee total protection, comfort, and ease of use. Our goal has always been to keep those who work in difficult conditions safe by providing high-end protective equipment designed to address specific risks. Among the most exposed categories are response teams who work in contact with swarms or nests of dangerous insects, such as bees, wasps, and hornets. Their stings can be very painful and, in severe cases, even lethal. Design studied down to the smallest detail Unlike standard beekeeping suits, B.PROTEC is designed with the needs of professional beekeepers in mind. It is a yellow full-body coverall made of double-layer anti-sting fabric, laboratory tested for puncture resistance. Its main features include: Front zip for quick dressing and complete coverage of the chest and head. Elasticated and Velcro cuffs and ankles to prevent insects from entering, ensuring quick opening. Built-in hood with steel mesh visor and helmet compliant with EN 397, providing 360° protection without limiting visibility. PVC gloves included, resistant to mechanical, chemical, and oil hazards. "articleBody" : "What is radiant heat? Numerous activities take place inside a foundry that expose operators to extreme heat conditions. Some are involved in melting and casting metals, others manage high-temperature furnaces, others handle and transport parts, and others perform quality checks on metal castings. There are also those responsible for plant maintenance and cooling the structures. Each task involves a different level of exposure to heat, sparks, and molten metal splashes. For this reason, choosing the right protective equipment is never optional but is a fundamental requirement for operator safety. Radiant heat is a form of thermal energy that is transmitted through electromagnetic waves, without the need for direct contact with an object. This type of heat can warm people and nearby surfaces simply through radiation. In industrial environments such as foundries, steelworks and iron and steel plants, radiant heat is particularly dangerous due to the presence of molten metal and high temperatures. Radiant heat vs contact heat It is important to distinguish between radiant heat and contact heat. Radiant heat propagates through space and can affect operators even without direct contact. Contact heat requires physical contact with hot surfaces and can cause immediate burns if the skin touches incandescent materials. This difference is crucial in choosing the appropriate protective clothing, known as PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), based on the type of exposure. Not sure what type of heat, radiant or contact, you need to protect yourself from in the workplace? Read our article! The risks of exposure to radiant heat in foundries n foundries, radiant heat generated by molten metal and high-temperature furnaces is one of the main threats to workers' health. Unlike contact heat, which causes immediate burns on contact, radiant heat acts constantly and invisibly, accumulating in the body and causing serious consequences if adequate PPE is not used. Prolonged exposure to radiant heat can cause: Thermal stress: the body struggles to disperse excess heat, resulting in fatigue, intense sweating and reduced concentration. Heatstroke: an acute and potentially fatal condition that manifests itself with dizziness, mental confusion, nausea and loss of consciousness. Cardiovascular problems: increased thermoregulatory effort can put pressure on the circulatory system, posing risks especially for those who already have medical conditions. Reduced cognitive and motor skills: hyperthermia compromises lucidity, reflexes and judgement, increasing the likelihood of errors and accidents at work. Long-term damage to tissues and respiratory tract: repeated exposure without protection can weaken the operator's physical resistance, leading to chronic dehydration and other medical complications. For this reason, it is essential that operators are trained on the symptoms of heat stress and equipped with certified PPE against radiant heat, such as those made of aluminised aramid fabric, which reflect up to 95% of heat, creating an indispensable protective barrier. Would you like to learn more about the dangers caused by heat in foundries and which roles are most at risk?fonderia e quali sono i ruoli più a rischio? Read our blog! "articleBody" : "When working in high temperature environments, such as foundries or metal processing plants, choosing the right heat protection glove is essential to ensure maximum safety. But what are the key aspects to consider when choosing thermal protective gloves? 1. Identifying Thermal and Mechanical Risks The first step in selecting protective gloves is to understand the specific risks of the work process. A thorough assessment enables the type of protection needed to be identified. Some of the main hazards to consider include: High operating temperature Molten metal splashes Heat from direct contact Radiant heat Additional mechanical hazards such as cuts, abrasions and punctures Without an accurate assessment of the hazards, it is impossible to select truly effective Personal Protective Equipment. Do you want to know which occupations are most exposed to heat in foundries? Find out in our in-depth study: Heat hazards in foundries: which roles are most risky. 2. Comfort and Ergonomics: Key Factors for Safety Protection is not the only parameter to consider: comfort and fit are equally important. Gloves that are uncomfortable or too stiff can impair manual dexterity, increasing the risk of errors and injuries. An ergonomic glove must: 1. Allow adequate freedom of movement 2. Fit the operator's hand correctly 3. Be made of materials suitable for the specific application (e.g. split leather, aramid fibre fabric, etc.). Find out more in our dedicated in-depth blog on The Importance of Ergonomic Gloves for Worker Protection and Safety. 3. Types of Heat Resistant Gloves: 5, 3 or 2 Finger? Not all heat-resistant gloves are the same. The structure of the fingers greatly influences dexterity and insulation. Here is a comparison: 5-finger glove: provides maximum mobility and precision, ideal for detailed work, but can be less easy to remove quickly in an emergency. 2-finger (mitten) glove: provides the best thermal insulation and is easier to remove quickly. Perfect for environments with extreme heat. 3-finger glove: represents a good compromise between protection and grip, useful when both heat resistance and discreet handling are required. For more details, see our complete guide available at How to choose the right glove: 5, 3 or 2 fingers? 4. Reference Standards: EN 388 and EN 407 When selecting a work glove, it is essential to check its compliance with European standards: EN 388:2016+A1:2018 - Protective gloves against mechanical hazards (abrasion, blade cut, tear, puncture, cut EN ISO 13997, impact) EN 407:2020 - Protective gloves against mechanical risks (fire behaviour, contact heat, convective heat, radiant heat, small molten metal splashes, large molten metal projections) Gloves certified according to these standards have a specific marking and are accompanied by technical documentation certifying their performance. "articleBody" : "The post-melting process in foundries is a crucial phase, not only for the quality of the final product, but also for the safety of the operators involved. However, the risks are not limited to this phase: the entire production cycle presents numerous critical issues that should not be underestimated. We discuss this in detail in our dedicated blog post: “What are the most at-risk roles in the foundry?”. To go into more detail, the post-fusion phase includes complex operations such as machining, heat treatment, finishing and the application of coatings. Activities often exposed to specific dangers, sometimes not immediately visible. Recognizing these risks and equipping yourself with the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential to building a safe, efficient and compliant work environment. The main risks after the melting process During the finishing and post-casting processing phase, operators are exposed to a variety of risks that must be managed carefully and with adequate protective equipment: 1. Exposure to heat: Handling hot castings and proximity to high-temperature surfaces make thermal risks one of the most common. Depending on the activity (grinding, welding, polishing, etc.), it is necessary to choose specific PPE, such as gloves resistant to contact heat or radiant heat. 2. Impact and abrasion risks: Mechanical finishing operations, such as grinding, can cause impacts, scratches and abrasions. These dangers are amplified in environments with the presence of metal scraps and uneven surfaces. 3. Respiratory hazards: Often overlooked, respiratory risks are related to silica dust, metal fumes, toxic vapors and paint residues. Prolonged inhalation of these substances can lead to serious pathologies such as silicosis, occupational asthma and chronic lung diseases. Protective Devices: What You Really Need Thermal protection in the foundry requires cut-resistant and heat-resistant gloves, specifically for high temperatures, with a good degree of resistance to mechanical risks. If you want to know more, we talk about it in our dedicated blog post: PPE and heat-resistant gloves with high cut resistance. Generally speaking, aramid gloves are ideal for environments where the threshold of 250°C is easily exceeded, offering an effective barrier up to 1000°C. For activities that require more flexibility, such as welding or finishing, leather gloves with aluminized inserts can be used for protection from radiant heat. The technological evolution of materials has also made it possible to combine heat resistance and cut protection, maintaining high dexterity even in complex working conditions. Coval Safety's answer: total protection with the HEAT line To ensure safety and comfort in high-temperature environments, Coval Safety offers the HEAT line, specialized in protection from radiant and contact heat. The EN 407:2020 standard is the one that regulates protection characteristics against heat and flame. A glove certified to this standard has passed a series of rigorous tests to ensure its effectiveness. EN 407:2020 sets out a number of requirements that a glove must meet, including: Limited flame propagation Resistance to contact heat Resistance to convective heat Resistance to radiant heat Resistance to small splashes of molten metal Resistance to large splashes of molten metal If the glove carries the EN 407:2020 certification mark, it means it has been tested to withstand these conditions and offers adequate protection against heat and flame. For more information, read our guide on how to read the test levels of EN 407:2020. All the information on the EN 407:2020 thermal resistance tests that are performed during certification can be found on the label. In addition to the full address of the manufacturer, the PPE category and product traceability, the manufacturer must state the reference standards with pictograms and levels. If you have difficulty reading the label on Coval Safety's PPE, don't worry! Consult our guide on how to correctly interpret the labels of our Personal Protective Equipment. How to check if a glove is fire retardant? When purchasing fire retardant gloves, consider these crucial aspects: Material: Check whether the glove is made of flame-retardant materials, such as aramid, fibreglass or para-aramid fabrics. If they are not present, the glove may not offer adequate protection against fire. Certification: Make sure the glove is EN 407:2020 certified, which guarantees resistance to heat and flame. Check the label or data sheet to confirm the certification. Heat resistance: Check that the glove offers protection against different heat sources, such as direct or convective contact, depending on the intended use. Check the protection levels in EN 407:2020. By following these simple steps, you will ensure maximum safety with certified flame retardant gloves suitable for your work. To ensure your safety in high-temperature environments, it is essential to choose EN 407:2020-certified fire-resistant gloves made of heat- and flame-resistant materials. If you are in doubt about your choice of PPE, consult an RSPP for professional guidance. Coval Safety offers certified protective equipment for reliable safety.
